In today's world, we deal with a quickly evolving range of technologies and have access to a wealth of information. Students can be more successful after graduation if they are digitally literate—having learned how to identify and create digital solutions, adapt to new tools, and discover more effective and efficient ways of doing things in their fields. The use of technology has transformed every discipline and career. IT is now a new LITERACY!
In 2010, Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Najib Razak identified eight key sectors in the National Key Economic Activities (NKEA) with the best potential to thrive as our country moves into the high-income bracket.
One of the key sectors? Information technology (IT).
But you already know this – which is why you’re pursuing an IT course at University Malaysia of Computer Science & Engineering (UNIMY). Good on you because there are plenty of opportunities with your IT degree, especially with Malaysia – and the world – moving towards incorporating IT in almost everything we do, from shopping, banking, education, engineering, agriculture, the list goes on.
Today, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is being used as a tool to improve the quality of life by improving efficiency and enhanced effectiveness.
Take banking for example – we no longer have to queue up at the bank to get things done; almost everything can be done online with a few clicks of the mouse.
Plus, our lives are now filled with fun and cool products that make life more efficiency and exciting – smartphones, drones, gadgets, smart cars – and more are being developed.
Who are the people behind the scene to make this possible? Programmers and IT professionals – that’s who you’ll be when you graduate from UNIMY.
Also, the demand for IT graduates in Malaysia is on the rise. From 2005 to 2010, the total number of IT jobs went from 33,851 to 104,500 – that’s a 209% increase!
Between 2011 and 2015, it was estimated that MSC Malaysia status companies offered 160,000 total jobs.
What are some of the hot IT jobs in the next five years? According to a research by Jobstreet.com, they are information security analysts, software developers, computer programmers, computer support analysts and data analysts – all jobs involving both the technical and business application side of things.
Also, IT professionals equipped with Java, C#, C++, .Net, SharePoint and Web Application will be highly sought after.
The even better news? The average salary for IT professionals in Malaysia are expected to rise above RM9,000 according to a research by Human Resources Online.
In 2017, fresh grads can expect an average salary of RM2,931; junior executives (1 to 4 years working experience) RM4,230; senior executives (more than 4 years working experience) RM7,169; managers RM11,454 and senior managers RM19,379. Ka-ching!
The best sectors to get in? According to the same research, the highest paying sectors for IT professionals in 2016 was automotive, heavy industry and machinery industries with an average monthly salary of RM8,952 followed by call centre, IT enabled services and BPO industries at RM8,822. Transport, storage, freight and shipping industries paid RM8,791; science and technology, aerospace and biotech industries paid RM8,760 and the computer and IT hardware industries paid RM8,397.
What does this all mean to you? That you’re on the right path to success!
And with the way things are going right now, this demand is going to continue rising.
